The Birds Of South Gloucestershire          Cetti's Warbler - cettia cetti

 

Cetti's Warbler is an Old World warbler which breeds in southern Europe and east southern temperate Asia as far as Afghanistan, it also breeds in northwest Africa. It is the only bush warbler which occurs outside Asia. Males are often only detected by the loud song which has an explosive 'plit' followed by the rhythm; 'what's my name Cetti-Cetti-Cetti that's it' and is named after the Italian zoologist Francesco Cetti.

 

There have been twenty-four Cetti's Warbler reported from S. Gloucestershire;

 

2011: (1)

A presumed male was present at Orchard Pools near Severn Beach on January 24th;

 

2010: (c.4)

One was noted at Orchard Pools, near Severn Beach on April 14th and again on the 17th; One was heard from brambles along the railway line at Severn Beach on September 12th; One was noted at The Glen at New Passage on October 18th, 22nd, 23rd and 31st with an additional bird on Northwick Warth also on October 23rd.

 

2009: (4)

One was heard in scrub near the R. Boyd at Wick Quarry from Raven's Rock raptor watch point on the evening of May 21st. It constitutes the first record of this species at this site; Two were heard near the R. Boyd at Wick Quarry from Raven's Rock raptor watch point on May 25th; One was trapped and ringed at Grebe Pond on Northwick Warth on October 17th; One, a male, was heard on Northwick Warth on November 15th and again on November 28th.

2008: (1)

One was heard and seen on Northwick Warth near the old landfill site on September 17th.

 

2006: (7)

An individual was located on January 11th at Severn Beach; One was noted on March 19th, 20th, 22nd and 31st at Severn Beach; In the Severn Beach/ New Passage/ Northwick Warth areas on April 1st, 2nd and 3rd; One was noted at Oldbury Power Station from April 5th and was heard on April 17th, 22nd and 29th; Possibly two singing on May 14th at Oldbury Power Station; One was reported on June 25th at Severn Beach.

 

2005: (4)

A male was heard singing from the small pool behind Lagoon III at Oldbury Power Station on June 18th and was the first record for this site; Individuals were reported from Severn Beach between October 13th - 18th; One reported at Orchard Pools near Severn Beach on October 10th, 21st, 24th and 27th; One was seen and heard at Severn Beach on December 10th and was present until December 23rd.

2003: (1)

A singing male was heard on March 18th at Orchard Pools near Severn Beach.

 

2001: (1)

One was reported on February 25th from the reed bed of Lagoon I at Oldbury Power Station.

 

1994: (1)

A presumed male was heard calling on April 24th at Littleton Brick Pits. This occurrence constitutes the first report of this species for S. Gloucestershire. (AJ Musgrove)
